Enabling road safety and sustainable mobility through advanced classification of vehicles

The overall vision of the VS project is to pilot, improve and commercialise our cost-effective and beyond the state-of-the-art magnetic sensor to generate real time data for the safety of roads, making European roads safer with minimal disruption to everyday road users. The aim is to deliver our advanced magnetic sensor connected to the road infrastructure for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) solutions that prevent incidents in tunnels and sensitive areas in cities. Road accidents cost Europe’s economy a staggering €300bn per year in lost productivity from mortalities and morbidities of victims. According to the CARE Annual Accident Report 2017, there were 1,079,720 injury accidents in 2015. In Europe tunnels are critical points of the road network with more than 3,500 tunnels, of which 241 are more than 3,000 meters long. Currently, European countries are investing heavily in their road infrastructure in order to comply with EU regulations. Most member states have formulated a Vision Zero (no fatalities) as a beacon. Disruptive Engineering has developed VS, a composed set of magnetic sensors (VS-1 embedded in the road and VS-2 installed by the road) capable of measuring vehicle physical and dynamic characteristics, as other sensors do, but it adds the capability of recognising maker and model of each detected vehicle. This offers important benefits for road and tunnels operators as our sensor can deliver a much more detailed overview of traffic on a road in real-time, enabling operators to make decisions faster and more accurate. Our sensor combines all the advantages of other systems (artificial vision, inductive loops) with improved performance and higher cost-efficiency. The aim of the envisaged project is to move our current prototype technology to full commercialisation onto the global markets.
